The Rural Economy

Granary and Land of Horses:
With its productive agriculture East Prussia contributed to the nourishment of the industrial west of Germany. Up until today the horses of Trakehnen are one of the most successful breeds of race horses. Besides, heavy cold-blooded Ermländer were appreciated working horses. In the breeding of cows records have been set as well.

Fishing in the "Curonian Lagoon":
One of the most important fishing regions in Germany was the "Curonian Lagoon". Its shallow waters required specially adapted boats: the "Kurenkähne". Each boat carried a skilfully made pennant, attached to the top of the mast. The pennant identified the home port of the ship and revealed many details about the fisherman and the world he lived in.
